Draw of the oasis
Among the many events Manresa hosted during Advent 2012, a weekend retreat for lay people proved popular, with some people choosing to attend for a day while others stayed for the weekend. The ‘Oasis Day’ was one of a number which have appeared on Manresa’s calendar since summer of 2012. The intention of these days was to offer people an opportunity to come and join other retreatants for a day of quiet, reflection and guided prayer.

Smaller numbers had participated in the four days before DecemberA significant change was noted when 8 December saw some 20 people come to Manresa for the Saturday, joining a similar number who were in the Centre of Spirituality for a Weekend Retreat for Lay People. The weekend was led by Avril O’Regan RLR and Piaras Jackson SJ, and drew on a wide range of sources in exploring Advent themes. Contemporary music, film, poetry and prose deepened participants appreciation of the scripture passages offered to guide their reflection.

Those who attended told of how they appreciated the silence - even though some admitted to dreading the prospect before they had the experience! Many said that they especially appreciated the opportunity to meet individually with a spiritual director. The next opportunity to avail of an oasis day will be on Saturday 26 January, when Ciary Quirke SJ will lead the team, guiding those who attend for the Oasis Day and those who will stay from Friday to Sunday at the next retreat for lay people. Further information can be found on the Manresa website or by calling 01 833 1352
